The majority of local authorities view the Gershon efficiency gains as successful, according to research recently conducted by public sector law specialist Nabarro LLP. The Government set a target to find a 3% annual efficiency improvement between 2008 and 2011, with a combined total of £30bn in efficiency savings. The local government share of this efficiency target was £4.9bn.But what is the impact of the credit crunch, bank collapses and the pre-Budget report on the likelihood that these beliefs will be achievable in the current economic climate?Nabarro interviewed 100 key decision-makers in local government, including chief executives and 151 officers. More than half the respondents (52%) are positive about the overall success of the Government's efficiency agenda, and only 4% view the initiatives as unsuccessful.
