Housing minister, Grant Shapps, has announced local cash payments totalling more than £430111 through the second year allocation of the New Homes Bonus (NHB). The funding has been shared by 353 authorities which helped deliver almost 159,000 homes throughout 2010/11. The NHB rewards councils for either building homes or bringing empty properties back into use, with affordable homes attracting a higher payment. Council tax raised from the new homes is matched by the Government for the first six years. Mr Shapps said: There is a culture shift taking place - communities which are going for growth are reaping rewards for their area, and councillors can now lead a mature debate about the benefits of development. This year's bonus is more than double the payment from year one, and that's why communities which welcome new homes can expect to see bigger cash bonuses and improved local services in the future.' Under the scheme each new Band D home earns the council payments of almost £9,000 and a new affordable home earns £2,100 more than a standard home.
