The ongoing controversy surrounding the re-grading of English GCSE results might be grabbing all the national headlines, but local authorities and the education sector are facing greater issues, which must not be overlooked. By 2015, the participation age will rise to 18 years old, which means already-stretched colleges and schools will have more young people to teach and train than ever before. Schools and colleges must plan ahead to ensure that parents and students are kept up-to-date with what is happening and how it will affect them. The transition also needs to be carefully planned by staff and headteachers to ensure it will not impact their funding or examination results.
