George Jones and John Stewart Professors emeriti at LSE and Birmingham University Cllr Sarah Richardson's letter ('Don't question Q&As', The MJ, 18 October) accuses us of suggesting 'that all "scrutiny" should take place as seminar-based "talking shops'". But nowhere in our article 'How to and how not to do overview and scrutiny' (The MJ, 27 September) did we write any such thing. Seminars were only one of many innovations we recommended local authorities to consider, as some are doing, and even involving the public.
