Not every authority has had to deal with the particular difficulty faced by Scarborough BC, which had given the controversial entertainer, Jimmy Savile, freedom of the borough. Confronting whether the now-shamed celebrity's name should be posthumously air-brushed from the honours board is undoubtedly a sensitive issue. But, arguably, the bigger challenge is for all councils to consider how to deal with a media and society whipped into frenzy about the horrors of child abuse. The hunt for more Jimmy Saviles is in danger of unleashing a tsunami of mistrust in any institutions which work with children.
