摘要

Being an anorak, I pass my spare time waiting for the signals to work again on London's Central line by wading through recent political history. After reading Alistair Darling's account of his chancellorship, Back From The Brink, I am now ploughing through a book curiously of exactly the same name - but about the rebirth of the Conservative Parry under David Cameron by Peter Snowdon. Two thoughts have struck. One is how much of an outsider Mr Cameron is to rank and file Conservatives. He came from obscurity to win in 2005, and dragged his dejected party into the 21st century, although it remained sceptical of his hoody-hugging indusivily politics. So long as he promises victory - and he still has yet to form a Conservative Government - members will back him. The moment he slips, they will turn.
