The leader of Portsmouth City Council has written to the Government, calling for a series of commitments designed to save its shipbuilding industry. Speaking to The MJ, Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson said he wanted a commitment from the Government to ensure the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers, six Type 45 destroyers and the planned Type 26 frigates would be maintained at the dockyards in Portsmouth. Cllr Vernon-Jackson told The MJ the move could 'save several hundred jobs'. BAE Systems announced on 6 November it was cutting 1,775 jobs at yards around Scotland and England, including 940 staff and 190 agency roles in Portsmouth, which will mean the end of shipbuilding altogether in the city.
