'Plan early' for shared chiefs, authorities told

There is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach to using a shared chief executive, but authorities which enter into joint initiatives need to be clear about their plan from the start, a report published today suggests. A best practice report by the Local Government Association and the influential Localis think-tank - published on 8 March - outlines what the two organisations view as key factors in the successful use of a shared chief. Core ingredients for success in such initiatives, which have saved some councils millions of pounds, are cited as mutual trust between political leaders, dear communication with employees, and a shared vision for the process.
