MWDA standing firm as Covanta disputes £1bn EfW contract snub

The Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) has defended its decision not to award a £1bn energy-from-waste deal to Covanta, claiming the bid contained serious financial risks. The MJ reported on 11 July that Covanta had launched a legal battle against the MWDA after the organisation named rivals SITA UK as the preferred bidder. The MWDA confirmed on 31 July it has now submitted its defence documents to the High Court and authority chief executive, Carl Beer, said the Covanta bid failed to reach the minimum scores in two out of the five evaluation areas. 'In addition, during evaluation, parts of the Covanta bid were seen to present serious risks including financial risks, to which the authority, district council and Merseyside council tax payers would be exposed,' said Mr Beer.
