Councils urged to use business rates more 'creatively'

Moribund high street economies could be revitalised if local authorities use new powers to foster innovative community businesses, a report has claimed. According to a report issued by Social Enterprise UK, 3Space and Meanwhile Space, greater local control of business rates could offer a partial answer to the long-term decline faced by many shopping areas. Entitled Business rates, economic and social value the authors recommend that councils should use the Localism Act powers to establish local tax policies which support long-term and sustainable social and economic outcomes and share best practice by showing which approaches have worked.
