Hard disciplines for design

For the past nine months I have had the privilege of co-chairing a Parliamentary Design Commission Inquiry into how design can contribute to renewing public services; including local government services. We have heard expert designers set out new approaches to everything, from customer services to running elections. And, we have heard from people in central and local government how they are using design thinking to help them better engage with their citizens and service users. Across the public sector we are all looking for ways to lower the total cost of service while also raising its effectiveness. We currently have too many 19th century facilities housing 20th century services that struggle to meet 21st century preferences and needs.
