Local government spending on law firms and barristers has fallen by 10% in the last year, according to new research by Thomson Reuters. Figures released by the law firm showed that councils in the UK spent £156m on external legal services in 2013/14, compared to £174m in the previous year. The firm also found that while the average local authority spent £360,000 on law firms in 2013/14, the cost was considerably higher for unitary authorities (£561,000) and London boroughs (£753,000). A number of councils have turned their own legal departments into practising law firms.
