'It's the best place in the UK to live. We have a wonderful ofter for residents, visitors and businesses. We have to make sure it stays that way but that doesn't mean remaining unchanged.' That, in a nutshell, is the challenge facing the next chief executive of Winchester City Council. If leader Stephen Godfrey sounds confident about his city's standing, it's with good reason. Survey after survey, the latest being from The Sunday Times earlier this year, has placed Winchester as one of the most desirable places in the country to live and work. The former seat of King Alfred and home to one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, it's a hotspot for tourism, has one of the most highly qualified populations in the UK and top ranking schools. Some 5.5 million people visited Winchester last year to take in its historic streets and enjoy what The Sunday Times described as 'an irresistible mix of food, festivals and feel-good factor'.
