High-performing local authorities should not be cut out of forming multi-academy trusts (MAT), two key education figures have insisted. National schools commissioner Sir David Carter and outgoing Ofsted chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw last week both pledged their support for good councils acquiring MAT status. Under education committee questioning last week, Sir David said he did not want to 'have a war' between local authority schools and academies.
