I am writing in response to the call by national think tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), for a better gender balance in local government (The MJ.co.uk, 22 Aug). South Tyneside MBC bucks the national trend in gender balance showing a 50/50 split of male and female councilors - both in the chamber and holding cabinet positions. We have been gender balanced for a number of years.
