With gridlock in Westminster, a possibility for the next five years, now is the time for local leaders to step up and spur the next wave of innovation and enterprise which will drive the UK's economy post-Brexit. First among equals, the new mayors, alongside the Mayor of London, should build coalitions encompassing city, suburbs and rural areas, and bridging political divisions which plague national politics. Under terrible circumstances over the last two months, we've already had a glimpse of how leadership dynamics are changing. It was the mayors of Greater Manchester and London, Andy Bumham and Sadiq Khan - rather than national politicians -who led dignified and uplifting responses to the recent terrorist attacks in their cities.
