Targets damage 'right kind of care'

The focus on delayed transfers of care compromises a strategic approach, a Care Quality Commission (CQC) official has warned.CQC policy manager Rich Brady was speaking at the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) spring seminar last week as figures showed a decrease in delayed days from 186,500 in February 2017 to 139,900 in February 2018.Mr Brady said: There is such a focus on achieving these targets that people don't end up receiving the right care in the right place. That focus on getting people out [of hospital] has consequences on the care people are receiving. If we focus on one part of the system we lose focus on prevention.'New ADASS president, Glen Garrod, said: 'Councils are playing their part when it comes to reducing the pressure on hospitals by bringing down the numbers of delayed transfers of care attributable to social care and easing the pressures on the health service.
