'Shelter is nearly forty years old and was starting to feel middle aged', its new director Adam Sampson, tells The MJ. The charity was set up in the 1960s when the groundbreaking television drama Cathy Come Home brought the plight of homeless people to the attention of the public. For many in the housing world former director Chris Holmes was synonymous with Shelter. During his seven years there income increased threefold to v30m, a 24 hour help-line was set up, which receives quarter of a million calls a year, and Shelter had major influence over the Homelessness Act 2002. Mr Holmes left last year with glowing testimonials - but later told the press the circumstances were less than clear cut - and Shelter announced it was ready to take a new direction.
