Since 1998 the West Midlands Local Govern-ment Association has worked in partnership with Excellence in Business (a training and consultancy organisation with a first class record), in actively supporting local authorities in the West Midlands to improve their performance. Support has been delivered through the West Midlands Performance Assessment and Improvement Scheme offering a 'critical friend' style peer assessment and feedback service. Its continuing popularity lies in its twin strengths of a robust methodology and unique network of regionally trained elected member, officer and stakeholder peer assessors. 2002 saw the scheme's strength and experience recognised nationally when the Audit Commission approached WMLGA to pilot 'peer challenge' as part of the CPA process for districts, resulting in our accreditation as a Peer Challenge provider.
