Only desperate deals with EU suppliers, begging,and central government stepping in at the IIth hour prevented councils running out of critical road salt supplies. The worst cold weather conditions in almost two decades saw councils left high and dry after their main supplier struggled to cope with demand. Furious LGA officials stepped in and battled the Highways Agency for supplies on Wednesday last week, before the Cabinet Office finally stepped in to co-ordinate provision at national level. Gloucestershire CC, which is currently considering legal action with its supplier, revealed it was only saved by Cornwall CC agreeing to release 500 tonnes of its road salt stock and the decision to switch to table salts.
