A war of words has broken out between trade unions and town hall chiefs over a new pay offer for local government workers. The three main unions, Unison, GMB and Unite have lodged a formal dispute with Local Government Employers (LGE) over the failure to make a pay offer for 2014/15 last month and wrote to LGE secretary, Sarah Messenger on 14 February to outline their position. In the letter, the national secretary of the Local Government Service Group, Heather Wakefield, said the trade unions considered themselves to be in 'formal dispute' with LGE over the lack of a new pay offer and a suggestion it will be 'pegged' to the national minimum wage.
