On March 26, 2007, Hastings Police Officer Rene Doffing was on routine patrol, taking his last loop before his shift ended. He saw two men fighting outside the Coliseum Bar, a local watering hole. The police force in Hastings had responded to this particular establishment far too often, the night before in fact. It had a history of disorderly conduct associated with intoxicated patrons, fighting into the night, disturbing the peace and tranquility of Hastings proper.
