My husband was in the Marine Corps when we rnet and married. He was stationed at Anacostia, Naval Station, in Washington, D.C., assigned to HMX-1 - Marine Helicopter Squadron One - Presidential Security. I remember him telling me the story of the time he suffered heat exhaustion in a race he ran in Parris Island during Boot Camp. He spent 3 days in the hospital. He was met by his platoon and a standing ovation upon his return to the barracks days later. He also received a phone call home. He had given 110% and this was his reward for winning the Regimental Field Meet in 1979. He left the Corps when his tour was up. I have watched him go from one thing to another over the course of the last 30 years, trying to find his nitch, but always giving each endeavor everything he's got. An old Marine Corps buddy visited in the summer of '06. He had gone into law enforcement and was close to retirement. This reunion prompted my husband to return to college.
