Law enforcement officers are on the front lines of the effort to stop synthetic drug abuse, and will be instrumental in effectively combating this emerging trend. The synthetic drug wave presents unique challenges, due to the continually shifting chemical ingredients in the drugs, and their widespread availability over the Internet and in head shops. Compounding the problem is the perception by some users that synthetic drugs are legal or not as harmful as other illegal drugs. In addition to traditional enforcement methods in the criminal justice system, it is critical for law enforcement agencies to work together with medical professionals, parents, and educators to share information about the dangers of synthetic drugs and recognize signs of abuse of these substances.
