Life of Brigden

From journalist to team manager of the factory Works Rover Mini Cooper race and rally campaigns, John Brigden was witness to the highs and lows of Rover during the 1990s. He spoke to Peter Barker to straighten out a few facts. I began my motorsport career in 1970 when I bought a race Mini with a couple of friends. We entered it in as many club races as we could afford but spent more time rescuing it from the circuit after breakdowns and crashes than actually racing it. After a while, I ended up entering the Mini myself, as I was the quickest driver. It was great fun and eventually led to my first proper job as a writer with Cars & Car Conversions magazine in 1977. I used to cover racing. We raced MG Midgets as well as Minis but were never allowed to go near rallying, as that was strictly the territory of other people.
