For a lot of older Minis, lovingly crafted restoration precedes a retirement of relative ease, taking in the odd car show, weekend trips away and occasional jaunts when the weather looks fine - the sort of life where wax polish and fuel are used in almost equal quantities. But some Minis have a tougher time of things, like Steve Johnson's Clubby Estate. Originally, it was purchased to be his daily driver while he looked around for, and then modified, a round-nose Mini saloon. Somewhere this plan went seriously awry.
