Exhausted

I have a standard 1989 998 Mini. For the past three months I have been trying to make my brand new exhaust seal to the exhaust manifold. So far I have smeared the flange and the exhaust clamp (one-bolt type) with exhaust paste, added an exhaust bandage between the bracket and the exhaust and swapped the one-bolt clamp for a double-bolted clamp. I have used a full tube of exhaust paste on the bracket and the exhaust and around the outside of the exhaust. I've tried all the above at least three times each, jacking the exhaust up and down and making sure the gearbox clamp is tight. Any ideas what on earth I should do next, other than scrap the car?
