Eddie Maher was one of those successful Midlands-based engine tuners whom everyone liked but few knew well. From his early career at Riley, in Coventry in the 1930s, to his peak at the BMC Morris Engines Branch in the 1960s, he was one of those instinctive tuners who could always get the most out of an engine, to whom nothing seemed impossible and his results were often outstanding. In so many ways, Geoff Healey used him as the 'go-to' character when help was needed with Healey and Austin-Healey, as did MG and Mini Cooper race teams of the 1950s and 1960s. Hampered only by having to use a walking stick to help him deal with the permanent after-effects of a childhood illness, Eddie seemed to be here, there and everywhere with the competition cars but never in the limelight.
