Peter Browning, former manager of the BMC Competitions Department, sadly passed away in March 2021. He was born in 1936 in North London, the great grandson of grocery magnate, John Sainsbury. In 1955 Peter's father, who was a car enthusiast and racer, bought him a Morris Minor. He joined the Harrow Car Club and qualified as a Licensed RAC Group 1 International Timekeeper. His life soon changed dramatically on meeting noted MG chronicler, F Wilson McComb, editor of MG Car Club magazine, Safety Fast, based at MG's Abingdon HQ. "Wilson invited me to take a look around. Next came a telephone call from MG's General Manager, John Thornley, inviting me to his office for a chat." This led to a job writing Safety Fast articles. Peter quickly got the feeling that there was something special about the Mini. "Drivers were forever demanding more power and, rather than just dismissing it, they considered the Mini was capable of handling an increase in performance, making it more competitive."
