CHROMITE DEPOSITS OF SHEBENIK-POGRADEC AND KUKES ULTRAMAFIC MASSIFS, ALBANIA

Albania was reported to be the world's third largest producer of chromite in the late 1980s with a run-of-mine ore production of approximately 1 200 000 t. Since the political and social changes of the early 1990s production has consistently declined, output in 1994 being about 220 000 t. The reasons for this decline include the exhaustion of reserves amenable to opencasting, geological problems in the main Bulqiza mine, a lack of modern equipment or capital investment, the increasing depth or poorer quality of existing reserves, labour problems and the adverse effects of a generally declining economy. Recent economic and industrial restructuring to allow foreign investment or partnerships has been slow to take effect.
