摘要

In the same way that Millican and Clark ask whether a pair of volumes of a conference conducted 5 years earlier could be justified (I, p. 1; references to pages are prefaced by the volume number), we could ask the same of a review twice as many years after that. But, in the same way that the arguments and insights of the conference justified the publication of the books, the relevance of the arguments of these papers to current debates in AI and Cognitive Psychology justifies the review. These debates are growing, rather than narrowing on a consensus, and the contribution of these volumes point out just how deep the controversies go.
