Catalyst Paper said that it is reducing output at three of its mills, including at the Crofton No. 1 paper machine on Vancouver Island, where 50 employees will be laid off, reported The Toronto Star. The company said that the Crofton mill will be idled on February 1 and remain shut down until market conditions improve. Catalyst is also cutting back output at its Elk Falls mill on Vancouver Island, as well as its mill in Snowflake, Arizona. The impact on jobs at those two mills wasn't disclosed by the company, but it said the duration of their curtailments will vary and be in response to orders. Catalyst, the owner of western Canada's largest paper-recycling operation, said its moves at the three mills will remove 55,000 ton of newsprint from production in the first quarter.
