I am frequently asked what can be done to provide a sustainable milk price for everyone within the supply chain, but let me start with some background. It is now 18 months since Dairy UK (Dial as it was then) published its fifth and final booklet on CAP reform. At that time there were two huge questions, crucial to the future of UK dairying, that could only be speculated on: Would the cuts in intervention and other support mechanisms flow through into lower market prices in general and lead to lower milk prices? If they did, how would this affect milk supply?
