Two descriptive "teasers" about this campaign are included at the front of the book. The first one reads, "There was New Guinea itself, as tough and tenacious as the enemy" from Gen. MacArthur. Also quoted is a saying among Japanese soldiers, "Heaven is Java, Hell is Burma, but no one comes back alive from New Guinea." That both sides thought of New Guinea in the same terms is telling, and also forms the basis for this campaign and this excellent book. Also telling are the attributions from four authors about this book. Each one included words such as "unknown," "resurrects," " forgotten" and "overlooked."
