This book is the next best thing to sitting down with a B-17 pilot and hearing him describe his experiences in World War II and the author is a good example of "The Greatest Generation." When the war began, he was a 19-year-old college student who had earned money for college by working in a mine deep underground. Two years later, at age 21, he was piloting a B-17 heavy bomber over Germany. Raymond Brim grew up in central Utah and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 24 Jan 42. After completing flight training, he expected to be sent to fighter training school; however, every other man on his class roster was assigned as a co-pilot on a B-17 or B-24. After bomber training in Wyoming and Kansas, he married his sweetheart on 7 Dec 42 while AWOL and being "covered" by his fellow trainees. Three months later, he was sent to England on a 16-day route by way of South America and Africa, arriving on 11 April 43.
