This book is a superb memoir. I found it so engrossing I could hardly put it down. Mace's childhood was similar to that of many of us growing up in the depression. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, and that took him to the Pacific from Peleliu to the deadly battleground of Okinawa. The story is told with feeling. All his thinking and actions are realistic. In the combat sequences, his descriptions are so vivid it's like sighting down an M-1 Garand yourself. His emotions run from fear to elation, pride, tiredness, exhaustion, wondering why to the point of having had enough - filth, dirt death exhaustion and wondering when does it end.
