The very first thing that I noticed about the book was that it was written by an active duty officer, already a successful author and historian. He knew his subject well. The book is well written with numerous photos and just enough details to keep the reader's interest in the life of Hal Moore. Even though Hal Moore gradu- ated at the "top of the bottom quarter of his class," in three years at West Point, he subsequently rose through the ranks to retire as a 3-star general. Just to get into the Military Academy showed his determination and desire to be an Army officer. Then, throughout his career, his devotion to the Army and to the troops he commanded showed that he was probably No. 1 in the class of 1945. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest award for valor, for his leadership in Viet Nam during the battle of la Drang (as in the movie, We Were Soldiers).
