"For Crew and Country" tells the story of the destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts before, during and after the Battle of the Samar Sea in October 1944. The crew of the vessel came from all walks of life, from all over the United States, and very quickly became a family serving together on the Roberts. The Roberts launched in January 1944 and was named after the sailor who lost his life at Guadalcanal saving the lives of others. LTC Robert W. Copeland, the man who commanded the Roberts, formed his officers and men into a unified fighting force as the destroyer escort patrolled the Pacific with various naval task forces. The decisive battle for this fighting ship came during her efforts to protect the naval task force Taffy 3 during the Samar Sea engagement.
