Within the pages of this book the author covers the war in Afghanistan during the period 2001 to 2014. The book is divided into three sections, 2001-03, 2004-07 and 2008-14, each of nine chapters. The underlying story told is that of mission creep. The United States entered Afghanistan in 2001 to punish those who the United States deemed responsible for the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, yet before long the mission assigned to the American troops in Afghanistan changed to nation building. Unfortunately, the blueprint chosen by the U.S. to rebuild Afghanistan sought to accomplish within a few years the transformation of a medieval-kinship society into a 21st-century democracy. Those proposing the rebuilding of Afghanistan within a two- to three-year period forgot that in took over 400 years for the U.S. to evolve from a post-renaissance society to the republican form of government it embraces today.
