Leonardo is preparing to offer innovative, technologically advanced unmanned and/or autonomous systems to complement its traditional offering of solutions in the defence, aerospace and security sectors. Growing Challenges and Opportunities Demand for unmanned aircraft is booming, with the supply side expanding in consequence. Plenty of small and medium-sized companies compete with larger enterprises in specific segments, sometimes succeeding in winning significant contracts. In effect, unmanned solutions are no longer intended purely for military use, but are also aimed at institutional, civilian, and commercial applications. The US and Israel, traditionally at the forefront of the field, have been joined by China, Russia, Turkey, India, and many others. In this context, Leonardo tries to maintain share in its traditional markets, while feeding an important evolutionary process for its range of products and services based on unmanned solutions. To defend its positioning - and potentially improve it - the company is preparing to offer innovative, technologically advanced unmanned and/ or autonomous systems to complement its traditional range of solutions in its core markets. In fact, most current unmanned aerial systems (UAS), conceived roughly twenty years ago. Have demonstrated their expected benefits and enormous potential. However, most need to be updated or replaced, and Leonardo is preparing for the expected new wealth of orders.
