Embraer's Super TUCANO Aims at Export Success

The Embraer EMB-314 Super TUCANO fills a unique niche in the military aerospace market in that it combines the small airframe of a turboprop trainer with the advanced avionics and weaponry of more advanced jets. This makes it a very cost-effective trainer that quite easily doubles as a light attack and counter-insurgency aircraft -something which helps explain its recent export success, especially in Latin America. In January 1991 Embraer began working on a follow-on to its highly successful EMB-312 TUCANO. More than 650 of these aircraft were built, representing a potentially large market for its designated successor. The new aircraft was intended to have better performance, agility and avionics, and carry a greater load than the original TUCANO - something Embraer successfully achieved.
