Military Aircraft Propulsion: Jets vs. Props

Perceptions of military fixed-wing aircraft propulsion nearly invariably point to afterburning turbojets or turbofans for supersonic-capable combat planes. In reality, however, there has always been a significant number of military aircraft which require totally different propulsion systems to efficiently perform their job, and this class is, if anything, expanding. Examples would include various types of transports, ISR and AEW platforms, ASW/MP aircraft and aerial tankers, to say nothing of the dedicated CAS/COIN models, whose importance is now being rediscovered.
