The global military community's insatiable appetite for unmanned systems in the air, on the ground and across the maritime domains is driving innovations throughout this sector. As technology enhances this precision navigation, and offensive weapons and other on-board payloads, new and improved air vehicles from producers around the globe are being introduced to the military. During ten years of UAV operations on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, and in other venues, paramilitary and regular military forces have developed simple tactics to interfere with the safe and accurate navigation of these vehicles. Jamming GPS signals, spoofing (where a bogus signal tricks a device into misidentifying its location) and other counterUAV tactics are among the challenges facing military-industry air vehicle teams. A USAF Air Combat Command spokesperson declined to speak on the record about this expanding, persistent threat, citing security concerns. Beyond this veil of secrecy, industry continues to offer solutions to provided unfettered UAV navigation. Elbit Systems is one company at the forefront of advancements in this sector. The firm's HERMES UAV features a new family of inertial navigation systems (INS) developed by its ELOP division.
