Armed Forces have always had a command post, whether that was Alexander the Great directing his staff prior to Guagamela; Napoleon watching the complete French defeat at Waterloo unfold from the La Belle Alliance farmhouse; or Rommel operating close to the North African front lines in his GREIF hanomag. The art of command remains the same but the technical means by which intelligence is gathered fused and represented to leaders and staff have expanded exponentially, as have their tasks as complex operations have expanded military responsibility beyond simple war-fighting to include nation building, disaster relief etc.
