Polish Technology and its Role in the International Defence Arena

After years of deep crisis and stagnation, the Polish defence industry is slowly progressing on its path of force modernisation. This is evident through recent plans that include multi-billion orders from the Polish Armed Forces. The Polish defence industry is associated with obsolete products from the Soviet Union era, this being true especially amongst the Poles, who still suffer from low self-esteem in this respect. After the fall of communism in 1989 many heavy industry companies collapsed, especially in the civil market; eastern markets were lost, and Polish state-run factories were unable to compete with more powerful and experienced Western companies, who acted aggressively and sometimes bought Polish companies only to close them down, with at least several thousands of experienced workers losing their jobs.
