Republic of Slovenia: A Continental and Maritime Country with a Unique Geostrategic Position

The Republic of Slovenia is a geographically small, but versatile European country with a great potential. In the 1991 War for Independence, we succeeded to win independence from the Former Yugoslavia following a short, but intense and brave combat of the members of Slovenian Territorial Defence and Police against the Yugoslav People's Army and the Federal Police. Following a conscious decision, the Territorial Defence developed into the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF), a land military force with a joint mentality and ambition to join NATO. After joining the Alliance in 2004, the SAF firmly followed allied political and military standards and procedures with the ambition to build modem and deployable military capabilities. Consequently, we currently participate in several concepts of the Alliance, such as Smart Defence and Connected Forces Initiative.
