European Phased Adaptive Approach -Current Developments

A "whole EPAA" programme was initiated by US President Barack Obama in October 2009, replacing the previous project of President George W. Bush, who wanted to deploy in Europe - specifically in the Czech Republic (radar) and Poland (launchers) - parts of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) missile system, which protects the US. The EPAA is intended to be more of an international solution, mainly protecting US allies, and less controversial for Russia, which was the most vocal critic of Bush's system and now criticises the EPAA. Both the US and NATO officials have repeatedly explained that the EPAA would defend mainly against current and future Iranian ballistic missiles and do not pose a threat to Russia's strategic forces.
