In the world of naval warfare, one can arguably say that there is no greater threat than that posed by submarines. Those that are uninformed or otherwise unaware would be shocked to learn just how many countries operate submarines, the majority of which utilise diesel-electric propulsion, which is exceptionally quiet. The majority of nations operate their submarines in the littoral, making them one of the most significant potential threats to shipping and freedom of navigation. It has therefore become increasingly important for navies to develop a robust anti-submarine capability - a key element of that resides in maritime helicopters which are specially configured for ASW.
