In 1951, the Korean War was brewing, and the military was looking for young single guys like me to fill its ranks. As a recent college graduate, I made a couple of attempts to get a direct commission from the Army and the Navy, but nothing worked out. So in July, I decided to enlist in the Air Force and take my chances on getting commissioned later.
