To verify an organization's tax-exempt status and eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions, visit www.irs.gov/charities. Click on Search for Charities, then Search Now. Enter the charity's name, city, and state. Call (877) 829-5500 to confirm an organization's status by phone or ask the charity for a copy of its IRS letter recognizing it as tax-exempt. CharityWatch.org, CharityNavigator.org, Guidestar.org, CharityChoices.org, and Give.org also are helpful in researching a charity.
